The talented team at Signature Smiles is always interested in finding new ways to better serve our patients, and that means exploring the latest advances in dental technologies and techniques.  When you lose one or more teeth, the experience can be understandably traumatic, impacting not only your confidence in the appearance of your smile, but also your oral function.

Signature Smiles offers several restorative options, including bridges, dentures, and dental implants.  While the restoration you choose will depend on several factors, dental implants offer a variety of incredible benefits.  What do you stand to gain when you choose dental implants from Signature Smiles?

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants start with a titanium post implanted in the jaw that bonds with the bone to stabilize the false tooth.  This is topped by an abutment, or connector placed atop the post, to which the false tooth, or crown, is permanently attached.  Dental implants can be an expensive option, but they most closely mimic your natural teeth and they can last up to 20 years or more with proper care, which is longer than alternative tooth replacement options.

Dental implants allow you to eat, drink, brush, floss, smile, and laugh just like you normally would.  It is generally agreed that dental implants are the most like your natural teeth, which is why they’ve become the gold standard for tooth replacement for patients that are good candidates.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits associated with dental implants are innumerable.  First and foremost, the post helps to stop bone deterioration common following tooth loss and the crown stops adjacent teeth from leaning into the gap.  This can preserve your oral health, eliminate tooth movement, and ensure that your bite pattern doesn’t change.

In addition, dental implants are permanent fixtures that look and act like natural teeth.  Your crown will seamlessly replace your missing tooth to complete your smile, and it allows you to eat and drink as you normally would, as well as brush and floss with ease.  Dental implants are a comfortable and convenient way to restore your smile and your confidence.

What to Expect When You Get Dental Implants

Dental implants may not be the right choice for every patient, but if you’re a good candidate, you can begin the process immediately after tooth loss.  Dental implants require optimal oral health, which could mean treating infection and decay.

You want the best opportunity for the post to bond with the bone in your jaw, and this relies on healthy, robust tissue.  You may also have to undergo bone grafting prior to placing the post, in order to ensure a stable base for the implant.

When you’re ready to receive the implant, we’ll numb the area to ensure your comfort and then carefully implant the post deep in the bone.  Once the post is placed, it could take about 3-6 months for healing to occur and for the implant to bond with the bone of your jaw, creating a sturdy base for your false tooth.  If all goes well, the temporary healing cap can then be replaced by the abutment and the permanent crown, completing the process.
